Happy Holidays! If you’re like most people, myself included, maybe you’ve over indulged a bit this holiday season? A little too much sugar, carbs, alcohol? Just one more treat, come on, it’s the Holidays after all! I’ll eat better next week…right?
Although they momentarily taste great, those holiday treats can really make you feel sluggish, low-energy, and even cranky with the sugar high followed by crash-and-burn low. Sound familiar?
One way I like to combat that low-energy feeling is with my fav Holiday Detox Greens Juice. Not only is it a festive and pretty color, it helps you detox the sugar, and tastes super-delish too. This is a great pick-me-up juice to drink every day too, even after holiday season has passed. It will give you a natural boost of energy, without all the added sugar of those holidays treats. And you can actually feel your cells drinking up the nutrition!
If you don’t have a juicer or Vitamix, or don’t have the time to make your own, there are a few good store-bought brands that are similar. Try any of these: Evolution Organic Essential Greens + Lime, Suja Organic Uber Greens, Daily Greens Organic Purity Juice, and Eat Clean Organic Green Meal. The can be found at your local natural grocer, PCC Natural Markets (Puget Sound area), Whole Foods, Sprouts, and Some Starbucks carry Evolution brand. Of course making you own juice you can always be assured of exactly what goes into your body.
Not yet a fan of greens juice? You may initially want to add more apple juice to make it sweeter. But since we’re trying to combat the sugar roller coaster with this detox juice, if you can follow the recipe it will be healthier for you. I’m so addicted to how good this juice makes me feel now I need my daily greens fix instead of a daily sugar fix. Hopefully you’ll be feeling the same way soon too.
Detox Greens Juice
Since most of these ingredients are on the Dirty Dozen list, it’s healthiest if you can use all organic ingredients here.
5-6 stalks organic celery
1/2-1 cucumber (1/2 a slicing cucumber or 1 whole pickling cucumber)
2-3 handfuls of organic spinach
5-6 leaves of organic romaine (use whole big leaves, not just hearts)
1-2 large kale leaves, stripped from stem
6-8 stems of parsley
1″-2″ ginger (depending on personal taste, more for hotter)
1 green organic apple (this adds just a bit of sweetness, you can easily leave it out for no sugar)
2 small limes (or 1 large lime) **Do NOT juice the lime, hand-squeeze it in at the end, juiced lime rind is very bitter.
In a juicer, juice all the ingredients except the limes. If you don’t have a juicer a Vitamix or other heavy-duty blender will work, you might want to blend it longer, or strain out some of the fiber, otherwise it will be a chewy juice. And you’ll need to add some ice to keep it from getting warm if you use a Vitamix. Once you have everything juiced or blended, squeeze in the fresh lime juice, and stir.
You can also use other green veggies you have on hand like broccoli, cabbage, cilantro, or watercress, or try with kiwis, instead of apples for a different flavor. Please leave a comment to let me know how you like it, or what other veggies you tried? Drink to your health, enjoy!
